Archbishop Carroll High School (Dayton, Ohio) has fired head football coach Mike Pomfret just two weeks before the start of its season.

The school district announced the decision on Monday, Aug. 3, after an "on-field incident at practice."

Pomfret was placed on administrative leave last week following an incident during the team's acclimation practice at Ohio Dominican University.

While additional details about the incident have not been revealed, Principal Matt Sableski confirmed on Monday that Pomfret was removed from both his coaching and teaching roles at the school.

A Carroll alumnus, Pomfret spent one season at the helm of the Patriots, who finished 1-9 upon his leadership.

Interim head coach Mitch Weitz and fellow Carroll alumnus has been hired to take over. Weitz has served as the boys bowling head coach since 2023 in addition to his assistant football coaching role.

“We are confident that Coach Weitz and our coaching staff will provide the leadership, support, and stability our players need as they move forward together,” Sableski said.

The Patriots are set to kick off the 2026-27 season on Aug. 21 at Stebbins High School.
