The Oregon Ducks have as good of a chance as any team in the nation to make the College Football Playoff in 2026. That's been well-established, with the extremely talented roster and highly-regarded coaching staff. ESPN Analytics gives the Ducks a 64.7% chance to make the CFP, which would be their third straight playoff appearance.
But what, exactly, will help entice the Ducks to the Playoff Selection Committe?
A Week 1 victory over the potential PAC-12 champs, according to ESPN's Heather Dinich.
"Oregon hosts Boise State in the season opener, and the Broncos will be looking to make a statement in their new conference," Dinich wrote. "This year, the committee's highest-ranked team from a Group of 6 conference is guaranteed a spot in the playoff — and it doesn't have to be a conference champion this year. Boise State should have a chance at that bid, and a head-to-head win against the Broncos could wind up being a sneaky good nonconference win."
The last time that the Broncos and Ducks matched up, Oregon escaped with a 37-34 win with a game-winning field goal in the final seconds. Boise State running back Ashton Jeanty, the eventual Heisman Trophy runner-up, ran all over the Ducks' defense to the tune of 192 yards and three touchdowns. Head coach Dan Lanning certainly hopes that it's not as nerve-wracking of a Week 1 win as that one against a similarity dangerous Broncos squad.
In the off chance that Oregon doesn't make the playoff because of blips on their resume, Dinich says that it would be due to a lack of statement road wins.
When looking at the Ducks' 2026 schedule, that can lead to some confusion, as Oregon plays at USC and Ohio State. But if they drop both of those games and win every other, finishing 10-2, their strongest road win would be over either Oklahoma State or Illinois, not nearly the caliber of USC or Ohio State.
In that scenario, the Ducks' prospects of making it to the CFP would be dim. Of course, the hope is that Oregon gets the Week 1 game against Boise State and one of the USC or Ohio State games, ensuring themselves a spot in the CFP. And once they're in, nothing that happened in the regular season matters.
A national championship is the main goal, but getting into the CFP field has to be the short-term goal right now for the Ducks.
