LSU football’s season has been full of turmoil, featuring the firings of head coach Brian Kelly, offensive coordinator Joe Sloan, and athletic director Scott Woodward.
The drama surrounding Kelly’s firing has been so all-encompassing that it felt like fans and the media completely forgot about one key thing, however: The mass exodus that typically follows a regime change.
Oklahoma State is a prime example of this situation. The Cowboys fired longtime head coach Mike Gundy in late September, and since then, 11 players have entered the transfer portal, according to 247Sports.
LSU’s situation has been quite different from Oklahoma State’s, however, as the drama surrounding the firings within the program has dominated the media space. Now that things have slowed down, people are beginning to seek clarity on who plans to remain in Baton Rouge under the team’s next head coach.
The biggest question in that area is the Tigers’ new starting quarterback, Michael Van Buren. Luckily, The Advocate’s Wilson Alexander asked Van Buren about his future directly on Tuesday evening, and here’s what Van Buren had to say:
“I love it here in Baton Rouge. I love Tiger Stadium, I love everything about this place. This is where I want to be, this is where I want to continue my career,” Van Buren explained.
Michael Van Buren made his wishes clear. He wants to stay at LSU through the coaching change.

Though the idea of Van Buren leaving after this year hasn’t been considered until recently, this is incredibly important news. Van Buren led the Tigers to the team’s first SEC win in over a month last weekend against Arkansas, throwing for 221 yards and a touchdown in the hard-fought victory.
It seems the Tigers now have their quarterback of the future locked in place. Now, they need to find a head coach.
