David Stone named to Outland, Nagurski Watch Lists

The Oklahoma Sooners have become known for their play along the defensive line over the last couple of seasons. That's the Brent Venables (in addition to assistants Todd Bates and Miguel Chavis) effect. Last year it came together with Oklahoma's best group under Venables. After losing Gracen Halton and Damonic Williams to the NFL, more will be put on a player that's already being projected to the first round of the 2027 NFL Draft. David Stone.

Stone played a significant role in the Oklahoma defensive tackle rotation last year and was disruptive, creating pressure and stopping the run. Now he's expected to take on a starting role in the middle of Oklahoma's defensive line, and the anticipation for his 2026 season is growing to a fever pitch.

On Tuesday, he was named to the Outland Trophy watch list along with the Nagurski Award watch list. The Outland Trophy goes to the best interior offensive or defensive lineman in the country. The Nagurski is awarded to the best defensive player in college football.

In 2025, Stone racked up 42 tackles, eight tackles for loss and 1.5 sacks. Stone also recorded 26 total pressures, good for fourth on the team last year, and 27 stops per Pro Football Focus, which was third.

Stone certainly has an opportunity to be in consideration for a number of postseason awards if his season matches the hype. But with his size and athleticism, he'll be a force in 2026.
