Akron Zips unveil play-calling raffle that could make one fan offensive coordinator

Ever watched play calls during a college football game and thought, “I can call something better than this?” That could become a reality for one lucky winner at a MAC football program in Akron.

On Tuesday afternoon, the Akron Zips football X account announced a once-in-a-lifetime raffle that gives one fan the chance to help call offensive plays. The top prize? Helping script the offense.

There is one catch, however. The opportunity only lasts for the team’s first offensive drive of its home opener. After that, the winner’s college football play-calling career will ride off into the Ohio sunset.

“Make history and be the lucky season ticket holder to design the opening drive of the home opener when @ZipsFB hosts Robert Morris!!” Akron wrote on X.

To enter, fans must be season ticket holders. Those who refer others to purchase season tickets can increase their odds by earning additional raffle entries.

The raffle takes place on Aug. 19, giving the winner plenty of time for film study before the Sept. 12 home opener.

The contest is certainly a unique way to engage fans while potentially driving more season ticket sales. It also raises one intriguing question: How much actual control over the opening-drive script will the winning fan have?

The promotion has already generated plenty of buzz on social media, with fans sharing what they would do if given the headset. “im not giving up the headset if we score,” one fan responded on social media.

“I’m in but if we fumble or throw a pick first play I’m disputing the credit card charge,” another fan stated.

The contest has certainly sparked plenty of humorous reactions, but what if the winning fan actually puts together a successful opening drive? Could that person earn a call from a college program looking to fill a spot on its coaching staff?

That’s probably a bit of a stretch. Still, the experience could create lifelong memories and make for some great family stories.
