The last time LSU football appeared in the SEC championship was 2022. Its overtime win against No. 6 Alabama set up a meeting with No. 1 Georgia inside Mercedes-Benz Stadium. The Tigers, led by future Heisman winner Jayden Daniels, were blown out and haven't sniffed the postseason since.

Just as it did ahead of last season, LSU stares down high expectations after signing the top transfer portal class and bringing in head coach Lane Kiffin. Analysts continue to mention them among the top teams in the country and the real numbers view the Tigers as a true conference contender.

ESPN's Football Power Index, FPI, gives LSU an 8.8% chance to win the SEC. It has the fourth-best chance to take the conference crown, trailing Texas (29.7%), Georgia (23.3%) and Alabama (10.3%). LSU plays the Longhorns and the Crimson Tide during the back half of the regular season.

The conference slate presents challenges for LSU. It needs to knock off at least two conference teams projected to be ranked in the top-25 in order to contend for an SEC championship and the College Football Playoffs.
