MIAMI, Fla. – Miami Hurricanes quarterback Darian Mensah was mentioned on CBS Sports' “most fascinating transfers” list.

Given the success of Cam Ward and Carson Beck, the 21-year-old is taking the same route, but facing higher expectations. Mensah is coming off a remarkable season at Duke. He led the Atlantic Coast Conference with 3,973 passing yards and 34 touchdowns. Mensah delivered the Blue Devils program its first ACC Championship in football since 1989. Despite being sacked 28 times, he found ways to produce an effective offense.
Mensah has an opportunity to surpass Ward and Beck’s success, especially with the talent surrounding him. The Hurricanes’ wide receiver core upgraded from last season. Joining college football star Malachi Toney, Joshua Moore, and Daylyn Upshaw in the room are transfers Cooper Barkate, Vandrevius Jacobs, and Cam Vaughn. Plus, a couple of highly-touted freshmen come in, such as Somourian Wingo and Milan Parris.
Given the plethora of targets, Mensah can carve out another jump in production this upcoming season. The Hurricanes’ offense could rank among the nation’s best. Mensah has the accuracy to connect on explosive plays and potentially run up the scoreboard.
The Hurricanes couldn’t have landed the California native soon enough during the winter portal window. Mensah entered on Jan. 16 – the last day to be inserted. Previously, the Hurricanes missed out on other top quarterbacks on the market, including Sam Leavitt and Brandon Sorsby. Emory Williams transferred from Miami to East Carolina. The Hurricanes were looking at a quarterback room of Luke Nickel, Judd Anderson, Joe Borchers, Vinny Gonzalez, and Dereon Coleman.
An uncertain quarterback situation could’ve put all championship hopes in harm's way. Instead, Mensah arrived at the Coral Gables campus looking to deliver. He joins a situation that can help him solidify a promising NFL future. Following one-and-done seasons at “The U,” Ward and Beck were both selected in the first three rounds of their draft class.
Mensah could be the most impactful transfer this upcoming season. If the Hurricanes return to the National Championship game, it’s an undisputed case. Although Mensah has never performed in the College Football Playoffs, he has the pedigree to rise to the occasion.
The Hurricanes could have another Heisman Trophy candidate, similar to Ward in 2024.
Mensah has every reason to have a successful season. He made the most of a subpar situation at Durham, North Carolina. Mensah can elevate with higher-quality talent in Coral Gables.
