Friday Flakes: The Day Nebraska Football and Taylor Martinez Beat Dana Holgorsen

YouTube can be great at times. Two nights ago my algorithm was nice enough to drop highlights from a high scoring game in 2010 between #16 ranked Nebraska and #14 ranked Oklahoma State.
As the YouTube thumbnail came across my screen I saw the title, “Nebraska high-scoring shootout with Oklahoma State 2010.” I vaguely remembered that nobody apparently wanted to play defense that game. It was the good ole days of the Big 12.
I picked the video the first play Nebraska’s opening kickoff to Oklahoma State and of course it was Eric Martin laying the wood on the returner.
The second play was Nebraska’s punt team and Alex Henery takes the snap and slowly rolls out to his right. He ends up keeping the ball and runs for s Alex Henery punting it and it was a roll out to the right and he kept the ball and ended up running for 27 yards before finally going down.
The other highlights I got to watch was a Niles 100 yard kick-off return for a touchdown and Eric Haage making an incredible interception off of a tipped ball by Lavante David.
At that time I couldn’t help but think of the quote from the TV show The Office: “I wish there was a way to know you’re in the good old days before you’ve actually left them.”
Then at 2:53 on the YouTube video was a shot of then Oklahoma State Offensive Coordinator Dana Holgorsen.
Which is kind of crazy to think that he is now Nebraska’s offensive coordinator. Well he was/is pretty good at his job and so was Taylor Martinez. Here are a few stats from the game.
Nebraska total yards – 540.
Oklahoma State total yards – 495.
Taylor Martinez’s Day – 323 yards passing, five touchdowns (zero interceptions), 121 yards rushing.
Oklahoma State’s Kendall Hunger – 201 yards rushing, two touchdowns on 26 carries.
Oklahoma State’s Justin Blackmon – 157 yards receiving, two touchdowns.
Final Score – Nebraska 51 – Oklahoma State 41.
Hard to fault Dana Holgorsen that day but Taylor Martinez was really good.
Oklahoma State went on to finish the season 10-2 by the way.

Nebraska center Justin Evans named to Rimington Award watch list
Nebraska senior center Justin Evans was one of 40 centers named to the Rimington Award Watch List on Thursday.
Evans returns as one of the team leaders for the Huskers this fall, as the East Orange, N.J., native has 31 career starts at Nebraska and logged 38 career appearances as a Husker. He leads an experienced Husker offensive line that returns a pair of starters in 2026. Last season, he started all 13 games at center, paving the way for Emmett Johnson to earn first-team All-America honors. He started all 12 games at guard in 2024 and played in all 13 games, including five starts, as a redshirt freshman in 2023.

Odell Beckham Jr. impresses at Giants camp, cites LeBron James
WHITE SULPHUR SPRINGS, W. Va. — Odell Beckham Jr. strung together his second straight strong day at practice Wednesday as he tries to revive his career.
The veteran wide receiver is trying to reinvent himself with the New York Giants — the team that drafted him a dozen years ago — after almost two years out of the NFL.
Beckham, 33, likened himself to a football version of LeBron James.
