LSU football's chances to win the national championship, per ESPN FPI

LSU football has yet to make the expanded College Football Playoff picture. The last time the Tigers played meaningful postseason football came in 2019 when Joe Burrow led them to winning the national championship under Ed Orgeron.

In its first season led by head coach Lane Kiffin, LSU is in the national title conversation just like it last year. The offseason buildup presents similarities. Ahead of the 2025 and 2026 seasons, LSU signed the top transfer portal class and multiple five-star commits out of high school.

LSU has a 3.5% chance to win the national championship per ESPN's Football Power Index, or FPI, which is tied for No. 9 with Texas Tech. Those chances are fourth-best among SEC teams, following Texas (12.8%), Georgia (9.6%) and Alabama (3.8%).

In 2025, LSU fell apart midway through the season with a three-game skid. The Tigers played themselves out of contention for the College Football Playoffs and got Brian Kelly fired. A loaded conference slate awaits them again.
