When it comes to big names in the 2028 class, there aren't many bigger than St. John's Prep (Danvers, MA) five-star quarterback Christopher Vargas.

Vargas may have two seasons of high school football remaining before he heads off to college, but getting his decision out of the way before his junior season kicks off seemed like a priority.

On Saturday Vargas did just that as he announced his commitment to Ryan Day and the Ohio State Buckeyes.

The 6-foot-4, 175-pounder is ranked by 247Sports as the No. 4 overall prospect in the 2028 cycle, the No. 2 quarterback and No. 1 player in Massachusetts. Vargas is ranked by the USA TODAY Sports 2028 composite ranking as the No. 6 prospect but is the No. 1 quarterback recruit.

With Vargas now committed, five of the top seven quarterbacks in the 2028 cycle have made their college commitments.

IMG Academy (Bradenton, FL) five-star Jayden Wade committed to Georgia last November, American Heritage (Miami, FL) four-star Neimann Lawrence committed to Texas on June 25, Benjamin Russell (Alexander City, AL) four-star Kingston Preyear committed to Alabama on July 17 and Hun School (Princeton, NJ) four-star Lukas Prock committed to Indiana on July 23.

This year will mark Vargas' third leading Eagles offense.

As a freshman in 2022, he led the Eagles to a 10-2 record throwing for 1,311 yards and 17 touchdowns. Last season they went 11-2 but Vargas was even better completing 67% of his passes for 2,038 yards and 24 touchdowns.

Buckeyes have their pass-catching duo of the future

While Ohio State has its fair share of great offensive talents in the 2027 cycle, like five-star wide receiver Jamier Brown and top 50 offensive tackle Kellen Wymer, the cornerstones of their 2028 class are a pass-catching duo that could shape the face of the Ohio State offense for years to come.

Vargas is the headliner of the 2028 class that includes five-star wide receiver Jett Harrison, the brother of former Ohio State great Marvin Harrison Jr. and NFL Hall of Famer Marvin Harrison Sr.

Jett announced his commitment to the Buckeyes on July 1.

According to 247Sports, the Buckeyes have one of the top two classes in the 2028 cycle with four commitments. Their other two commitments include Trotwood-Madison (Dayton, OH) edge Jameer Whyce and IMG Academy (FL) four-star running back Elijah Newman-Hall.

Vargas commitment to the Buckeyes shouldn't come as a shock to anyone who has followed his recruitment closely.

The Buckeyes were one of the first Power Four teams to extend an offer to him as they got involved in his recruitment on November 30, 2024. Boston College, Syracuse and Penn State were the only other Power Four teams to offer him before the Buckeyes.

He's visited each of those schools more than any other, but Ohio State has hosted the most frequently. He was in Columbus on March 28 for an unofficial visit and was back on campus the weekend in mid-June for another official visit.
