Nebraska football hires new director of player of development

Nebraska coach Matt Rhule announced a new member of the staff on Saturday. Running back Damon Benning will join the program as the director of player development.

Benning will replace Gus Fielder, who left for an athletic director job at a Georgia high school. In the meantime, Benning currently works on Nebraska’s radio network. His son Caleb currently plays safety for the program as well.

Benning was a running back for the program from 1993-1996 and won two national championships. He was the Orange Bowl MVP in 1996 and finished his career with 1,562 yards and 20 touchdowns.

Now, he will look to play a pivotal role in helping shape the future. Benning has confirmed that he will no longer serve as the color analyst for football games.

In any event, having Benning on the staff should be an asset for the program. It will be interesting to see how we can help the program moving forward.
