Auburn interim head coach DJ Durkin is faced with an issue regarding his quarterbacks ahead of the Tigers’ Week 13 game with Mercer at Jordan-Hare Stadium. However, it appears that he has found a solution.

According to a report by Tom Loy of 247Sports, Auburn is set to start true freshman Deuce Knight at quarterback on Saturday when the Tigers face Mercer. The decision comes after Durkin elected to sit Ashton Daniels to preserve his redshirt, which will allow him to return to the team next year with one full season of eligibility remaining.

Durkin shared earlier this week that both Knight and Jackson Arnold would get snaps at quarterback this week and that he will construct a plan that revolves around the strengths of both players. Durkin is also excited to allow Knight to prove himself and give Auburn fans a taste of what they can expect to see out of him in the future.

“I think with Deuce, it’s like any other guy. You give him a plan, and you give him the right tools to help him that suit his strengths,” Durkin said. “I think, again, it’s about the teammates around you. The quarterback position gets the spotlight, obviously. They often get more credit than they deserve and definitely get more blame than they deserve, but it’s about the guys around you. I think Deuce understands that, too. He’s got great players around him, and his job is to be the distributor of the ball to those guys, and that’s what we’re going to ask him to do.”

Knight signed with Auburn as the No. 6 quarterback of the 2025 class and the No. 2 player from Mississippi. He has appeared in one game this season, where he completed 2-of-5 passes for 20 yards in Auburn’s 42-3 win over Ball State in Week 2. Due to only appearing in one game to this point, Knight will keep his freshman status for next season.

Auburn faces Mercer on Saturday at 1 p.m. CT at Jordan-Hare Stadium. The game will be streamed on SEC Network+.
