Major SEC program honoring former Heisman winner with new uniform design

Florida is going retro, and Gators fans have a fresh look to get excited about heading into the 2026 college football season.
On social media, the Gators posted a short video with the caption “Retro unlocked.” The team paired it with a message about honoring Steve Spurrier’s 1966 Heisman Trophy season. The clip shows a player in a white throwback jersey with No. 26, styled to echo the 1960s teams that Spurrier led as quarterback in Gainesville.
This is not the first time Florida has leaned on its history for a uniform release. But the timing and the road-white design give it a different feel this time around.
Steve Spurrier and the 1966 Florida Gators legacy
Spurrier won the Heisman Trophy in 1966 as Florida’s quarterback. That team went 9-2 and beat No. 8 Georgia Tech in the Orange Bowl to close out the run. Florida averaged 24 points per game during a college football era when defense usually ruled.
The connection runs deep because Spurrier later coached the Gators in the 1990s and built the program into an SEC power. So a jersey tied to his playing days touches two eras of Florida success at once. For a fan base that has not reached double-digit wins since 2019, that history is remembered fondly.
The retail version of the new road white jersey has already surfaced online. It draws its look from those legendary 1960s teams, and the white helmet with the classic “F” is a big departure from the modern orange helmet with the “Gators” script.
Jon Sumrall and the timing of Florida’s uniform reveal
Back in May, Gators head coach Jon Sumrall did a blind ranking of past Florida uniform combinations for CBS Sports and offered a clear opinion on the throwback look.
“I think I nailed it,” Sumrall said during that segment, before ruling out one of the program’s less popular designs and adding, “we aren’t pulling those out.”
The reveal lands as Sumrall enters his first season as Florida’s coach. He arrived after four straight winning seasons at Troy and Tulane, and he replaced Billy Napier following a rough four-year stretch for the program.
A throwback uniform tied to Florida’s proudest history is a smart marketing move for a coach trying to reconnect a beaten-down fan base with better days.
There is some reporting that Florida could debut the white throwbacks at home during their Oct. 10 homecoming game against South Carolina. The Gators open the 2026 season Sept. 5 at home against Florida Atlantic before starting SEC play Sept. 19 at Auburn.
