With the South Carolina football program led by quarterback LaNorris Sellers, he looks to put together an impressive 2026 season, with the chances of him going to the NFL at play for the next draft. As the South Carolina football star looks to stand out, opposing coaches do have some doubts.
In Adam Rittenberg’s latest piece for ESPN that asks rival coaches about the top quarterbacks in their respective conferences, one SEC defensive coordinator would keep it real on Sellers.
The coach would go into Sellers’ biggest issue, which is processing “in the middle of the game,” saying that if Gamecocks offensive coordinator Kendal Briles instills a certain aspect in his game, the quarterback “could be scary.”

“He really struggles to process in the middle of a game,” the coordinator said. “When you move him around, or you move things around on him, he just really struggles. But I think Kendal’s system, if Kendal can be like, ‘Hey, you do this, or you do this or take off running,’ if he can get him to do that, I think the kid could be scary. He’s so hard to bring down.”
South Carolina’s LaNorris Sellers looks to return to his strengths
Last season for the South Carolina football team, Sellers threw for 2,437 yards to go along with 13 touchdowns and eight interceptions in 12 games, and on the ground, he rushed for 270 yards and five scores. The hope is that Sellers could show off more of his running ability, as he did in the 2024 season, rushing for a program record 674 yards and seven touchdowns.
“Kendal will make it a little bit more friendly,” a different SEC defensive coordinator said to ESPN. “He’s not going to force him to be something he’s not, which I felt like at times he was last year. They’ve got to try to win games. You’re not a pocket passer. The best thing you do is take off and run, because no one can tackle you.”
It remains to be seen how Sellers will perform as the opening game for the Gamecocks comes on Sept. 5 against Kent State.
