Can UCF Win Against TCU, Pittsburgh To Start 2026 4-0?

The UCF Knights have opened the season undefeated in non-conference play for three straight seasons, and Pete Mundo believes the program can take it one step further: starting 4-0.

UCF's first four matchups are against Bethune-Cookman, Pittsburgh, Georgia State and Texas Christian. It is overwhelmingly favored to win in Weeks 1 and 3, but Weeks 2 and 4 are the swing games.

Pittsburgh is the toughest non-conference opponent the team has faced in years. The Panthers finished last season with an 8-4 record (6-2 ACC), picked up ranked upsets over then-No. 25 Florida State and then-No. 16 Georgia Tech and brought back quarterback Mason Heintschel and running back Ja'Kyrian Turner.

Mundo said he gave the Knights the benefit of the doubt in this game. He cited the Panthers' odd scheduling, starting ACC play in Week 3, and two days fewer rest.

"They'll be potentially already thinking about conference play the week after that," Mundo said. "UCF doesn't have to worry about that; they're playing Georgia State Week 3. So they're totally focused on Pittsburgh. Pittsburgh got less rest on top of potentially thinking about looking ahead."

His comments are sound, but teams rarely prepare ahead for future matchups. Offensive lineman Preston Cushman said the Knights are focusing on putting themselves in position to go 1-0 every week.

Pittsburgh most likely won't overlook an opponent because conference play starts sooner than expected regardless of weird scheduling.

Texas Christian is the Big 12 opener. The last time these two programs met was in 2024, and UCF survived a nail-biter 35-34.

The Horned Frogs entered halftime with a 21-7 lead, powered by two passing touchdowns from quarterback Josh Hoover. Quarterback KJ Jefferson and running back RJ Harvey led the Knights' comeback by helping the team score 28 second-half points to their opponent's 13.

Jefferson connected with wide receiver Kobe Hudson on a 20-yard pass for the game-tying touchdown. Kicker Colton Boomer nailed the PAT to give UCF a one-point lead they protected until the game clock reached double zeros.

ESPN's matchup predictor gave coach Scott Frost's team a 46% chance to win this year's game. It's an even matchup, but Frost is confident with quarterback Alonza Barnett III leading the helm and retaining 61% of last season's production.

Mundo said it would be the best-case scenario for the Knights to start 4-0. It's been seven seasons since the program started 4-0, and that was during the school's golden era, coming off a historic undefeated season.

Starting the year undefeated is encouraging, but finishing strong is equally important. An abysmal 2-7 conference record dashed their hopes of making a bowl game.
