Heisman Trophy Winner Gave DJ Lagway Blunt Advice On Baylor Move

Heisman Trophy winner Robert Griffin III is glad to see quarterback DJ Lagway transfer to his alma mater.

Lagway was a five-star recruit in the class of 2024 and was the top-ranked quarterback and third-ranked prospect, according to 247Sports. The Texas native committed to Florida and started seven games as a true freshman in 2024, going 6-1 and giving the Gators plenty of promise.

However, last season, Lagway struggled mightily, going 4-8 in 12 starts, taking a step back after his stellar true freshman season. After the season, Lagway entered the transfer portal and had a couple of schools interested in him.

Lagway committed to the Baylor Bears via the transfer portal and became the highest-rated recruit to ever play for Baylor.

The soon-to-be 21-year-old gives Baylor plenty of hope this season as the Bears are coming off a disappointing 5-7 season. Ahead of Lagway's first year at Baylor, Griffin III, who played college football at Baylor and won a Heisman, revealed he gave the quarterback some advice.

"He's at Baylor, that's my alma mater," Griffin III said about Lagway on The Brandon Walker College Football Show on Monday. "The Baylor Bears are going to sink or swim based on how DJ Lagway plays. When I had my conversations with him and he was contemplating Florida State, Kentucky all these different places. My advice to him was, you want to go somewhere where it is on your back, you want to go somewhere where they’re gonna go as you go. You can say you can do that anywhere.

"But Baylor has struggled and DJ Lagway's got a lot on his plate, he's got Dave Aranda's job on the line, he has his career and his potential to be a first-round pick. I think that is where you want to be. (Jake) Spavital is the perfect offense for DJ, it's what he ran in high school, they are going to throw the football. He might get 40-45 attempts per game and one thing about DJ that disappeared at Florida was his ability to run, and I think he will have that back this year. He's healthier than he's ever been."

As Griffin III noted, which I agree with, Lagway has a ton of pressure on him at Baylor, which he might not have had at other schools. So, if he can perform at a high level for the Bears and help them compete in the Big 12, it will only help his future.

Of course, after a disappointing season at Florida, the 2026 college football season could be do-or-die for Lagway's future, too.

As Lagway entered the transfer portal, the former five-star quarterback had several schools interested in him.

Yet, Lagway felt like Baylor was the best fit for him for a few reasons. Not only does he get to go back home and play in Texas, but he also feels Baylor's offense would help him thrive.

"I'd say really just the coaching staff, and just the atmosphere and just really the — I feel like the resources that are provided here for the quarterback experience," Lagway said on The Sic 'Em Podcast on why he transfered to Baylor.

"I'd say just Coach Aranda and Coach Spav. Just the way, especially on the offensive side, the way Coach Spav dials it up, you know, and just seeing what Sawyer did in the previous two years was definitely eye-catching to me. So I'm excited to continue to learn this offense and continue to get better," he added.

If Lagway can help turn around Baylor, the Bears could be a dark horse in the Big 12.
