Head coach Kyle Whittingham is about to undertake the responsibility of turning around the storied Michigan football program in his first year post-Sherron Moore. Not one could be more excited than starting QB Bryce Underwood.
Whittingham was hired by Michigan the day after Christmas. This was around the time the Wolverines were playing in the Citrus Bowl against Texas in Orlando. At the time, Underwood and his teammates were in their hotel room when they got the news. He shared that enthusiasm on Monday, per Alex Byington of On3Sports.com, and referred to his pedigree as “savage”.
“It was a lot of excitement going on,” Underwood told NBC Sports’ Jon Fanta during an 11-minute interview released Monday afternoon. “We did our research on Coach Whittingham, probably the night he got the job. He’s a winner, we’re excited. He’s a savage. We’re ready to go.”

Whittingham previously coached at the University of Utah for 21 seasons (2005 to 2025). He was brought on after the firing and arrest of Sherron Moore for an inappropriate relationship with a staffer.
At Utah, Whittingham compiled a record of 177–88. He also had a bowl record of 11-6. Additionally, Whittingham has won a Mountain West Conference title in 2008 and two Pac-12 titles in 2021 and 2022.
In 2008, he led Utah to an undefeated season at 13-0 and defeated Alabama in the Sugar Bowl.
Along the way, he passed Ike Armstrong in 2021 to become the winningest coach in program history.
The five-star Underwood is looking to build off a first year in which he threw for 2,428 yards and 11 touchdowns.
