LSU football offense settling into rhythm during fall camp

LSU football began fall camp with questions on offense. Quarterback Sam Leavitt was limited in spring practice due to a foot injury, and LSU's pass-catchers flashed brilliance throughout the spring but were inconsistent.

With training camp in full swing, the offense is beginning to settle in. Leavitt is healthy, and a handful of wide receivers are separating and emerging as impact players. LSU continues to see continuity on the offensive line, too.

All eyes have been on Leavitt as he took the field for his first healthy practices in Baton Rouge.

"Sam's had a great week, had a great practice today," LSU head coach Lane Kiffin said on Aug. 10, "Taking care of the ball, really throwing the ball really accurate and on time. Extremely pleased with his week and how he looks."

Kiffin noted that the relationship between Leavitt and LSU offensive coordinator Charlie Weis Jr. is continuing to develop. The two are gaining trust — which is showing up in Weis and Leavitt's helmet communication.

As Leavitt gets comfortable, so do his pass catchers. Kiffin said the wide receiver room has "been very competitive" and that it's "one of the better rooms" on LSU's roster.

Up front, the same five linemen have remained starters. It's not a good sign when teams are quick to rotate offensive linemen in training camp. It usually means the coaches don't have five players they trust. That's not the case for LSU right now. Jordan Seaton, Bo Bordelon, Braelin Moore, Aliou Bah, and Weston Davis all seem to have a firm grip on their respective offensive line positions.

Questions about the offense will remain until LSU hits the field and plays real football, but so far, there have been plenty of positive signs coming out of camp. The unit appears to be on track.
