VirginiaTech won three games last season. Itfired its head coach three games in.Then it hired a coach who, 10 monthsearlier, had been one win away from playingfor a national title.
That is thedistance the Hokies are trying to coverin a single offseason. It is also why,for the first time in years, there isa real reason to believe Virginia Tech isbuilding toward something instead ofjust surviving.
A rsum Blacksburg hasn't seen
Head coach James Franklin went 104-45 in 11-plus seasons at Penn State and 128-60 overall, counting his three years at Vanderbilt. He reached the College Football Playoff semifinal for the 2024 season, got fired at 3-3 the next October, then landed in Blacksburg by mid-November. The man he replaced, former head coach Brent Pry, went 16-24 in three-plus seasons and was let go after an 0-3 start. In a strange twist, Pry stayed on as Franklin's defensive coordinator, and Ty Howle followed from Penn State to run the offense.
A roster rebuilt from scratch
This is not a tweak. More than 50 newcomers are on the roster, a turnover significant even by transfer-portal standards. Franklin dragged the 2026 recruiting class from outside the top 120 into the top 25 in weeks, then hit the portal, where ESPN ranked his haul No. 15 nationally and 247Sports had it fourth in the ACC. He built a pipeline to his old program, bringing quarterback Ethan Grunkemeyer, tight end Luke Reynolds, receiver Tyseer Denmark, and many more from Penn State. He added Duke slot man Que'Sean Brown and mostly avoided one-year rentals, chasing players with eligibility left.
The money is finally there
None of this happens without a check. For years, Virginia Tech sat near the bottom of the ACC in athletics funding, and it showed. The Hokies have managed one winning season in the past six and haven't been the same since Frank Beamer retired. Last September the Board of Visitors changed the math, approving a four-year, $229 million "Invest to Win" plan, and an anonymous donor soon added a record $20 million gift. Franklin has said the commitment was a big reason he took the job. "In today's college football, there needs to be alignment," he said. A year ago, Blacksburg had none of it.
Why the buzz comes with a warning
The optimism is real. Ticket demand has spiked, and players are talking openly about restoring the program rather than clearing last year's low bar.
But 50-plus newcomers mean an entire locker room learning a new system at once, and continuity predicts wins better than raw talent does. Virginia Tech hasn't beaten a nonconference Power Four opponent since 2017, and Old Dominion, which helped end Pry's tenure, is back on the September slate. It starts Sept. 5 against VMI at Lane Stadium, the first meeting since 1984. Different doesn't guarantee fixed. But for the first time in years, the two words feel like they might mean the same thing.
