There’s some drama brewing in the LSU camp between a former Heisman winner and the team. It was reported yesterday that Washington Commanders quarterback and 2023 Heisman winner Jayden Daniels has sent a cease-and-desist to his alma mater. The issue stems from the team’s decision to give the #5 jersey to incoming rookie DJ Pickett, the number worn by Daniels in his Heisman season. Cincinnati Bengals star Joe Burrow, who also hails from LSU, was asked about his thoughts on this matter.
Burrow gave a measured answer, saying that he just learned about the situation hours before the question was asked. The Bengals quarterback declined to give an opinion, saying that he didn’t really know too much about the situation. When asked whether LSU gave him the same promise that Daniels reportedly got, he said that he did.
“Yeah, they told me they wouldn’t use it again,” Burrow said, per Caleb Noe. “But, you know, you never know what happens.”

Like Daniels, Burrow also won the Heisman Trophy when he was with LSU. Burrow’s Heisman season came at the peak of LSU’s powers, when they went 15-0 in 2019. The Bengals quarterback was the engine of that team, a team widely considered to be one of the best teams in college football history. Burrow was also the first LSU Tiger to win the Heisman since Billy Cannon in 1959. Cannon’s #20 jersey is the only number retired by the LSU program.
Daniels’ camp has reportedly taken offense to the fact that the quarterback’s #5 jersey was given to Pickett, despite being promised that no player would be given that jersey again. LSU head coach Lane Kiffin stood his ground on the topic, saying that the new recruit will be wearing the #5 jersey.
“DJ is in [No.] 5, and that was a situation that was promised to him in recruiting here, for him to sign here,” Kiffin said. “I’ve done a lot of research on that with the family and the representatives and the people, so really I didn’t have a decision to make. It was promised to the kid. It wasn’t done for whatever [reason]. I’m not going to get into that.”
