A new report on Florida State and head coach Mike Norvell suggests the Seminoles fanbase needs him to have a big bounce-back season because they are stuck with him due to the program’s financial troubles.

In 2023, Florida State was one of the biggest stories in football after Norvell’s team posted just the third season with 13 or more wins in school history and somehow were snubbed by the playoff selection committee. However, instead of proving them wrong in the years since, the Seminoles have gone in the complete opposite direction.

Florida State won’t get help paying for a Mike Norvell buyout

Over the last two seasons, Norvell’s teams have gone 7-17, including an awful 2-10 record in 2024. It has frustrated Florida State fans to no end, and most feel that if the Seminoles don’t have a big turnaround in 2026, they need to find a new head coach.

However, after that 13-1 year, the coach received a massive contract extension through the end of the decade. To get out of that deal after December 1, Florida State would be on the hook for $46.9 million. Unfortunately, the school is not on good financial footing after building a new multi-million-dollar facility and two losing seasons that have hurt their revenue.

There is the hope that Norvell could just leave to take another major program, and that school could pay for some of the buyout. But according to ESPN Pete Thamel, that is highly unlikely.

“Now, Florida State has a bill it can’t afford. Could Mike Norvell go get another power conference head coaching job like James Franklin did? I would say at this moment, if he’s fired December 1st, that would be unlikely. He could go be an OC and make some money, but Florida State would likely be on the hook for a big chunk of that cash. That is something, as they’re swimming in debt right now and trying to figure out things out financially, would be very, very difficult.”

When did it all go wrong for Mike Norvell at Florida State?

Making matters worse is that the Seminoles have looked to find their way out of the ACC over the last couple of years. Losing seasons doesn’t help that pursuit. That, along with FSU’s financial situation, means the school needs the coach to return to elite status if they want to leave for a better conference TV deal in the near future.

The messy situation has led to a lot of speculation on where things went wrong for Norvell and the program. Thamel offered up an interesting theory. He suggested that back when they had a chance to beat out Miami for quarterback Cam Ward, they were viewed as the favorites, but weren’t willing to pay the big bucks to get him. The college football insider believes that was the start of the downfall for FSU.

“I just wonder how history would be different if Cam Ward had went to Florida State.”
