Indiana football is prepping for a season in which they hold the distinct honor of defending champions. However, Indiana isn’t entering the season as No. 1, so the pressure is on.
Head coach Curt Cignetti has his hands full and is maintaining his usual tell-like-it-is persona. On Friday, Cignetti called out the recent cancellation of a series against Notre Dame scheduled for 2030-31 at home, per Alex Bylington of On3Sports.com. The cancellation follows Notre Dame and USC renewing their rivalry series between 2030 and 2033.
True to form, Cignetti didn’t pull any punches.

“I’d like to play Notre Dame,” Cignetti said to The Hoosier’s Colin McMahon. “They ought to come to our place twice, and we’ll go there once, since they’re not in a conference.”
The Hoosiers were supposed to travel to South Bend in 2030, and then the Fighting Irish would venture out to Bloomington in 2031.
Historically, Indiana and Notre Dame have played against each other since 1898. Given Notre Dame’s football prowess, they hold the obvious edge at 24-1-5. They didn’t play from 1958 to 1991, and Notre Dame won 49-27 in 1991. In 2024, they met in the first round of the College Football Playoff in Cignetti’s first year as head coach. Notre Dame defeated Indiana 27-17.
Cignetti and company have put Indiana on the map this past year. They went undefeated (16-0) and won their first national championship in program history 27-21 over Miami (FL). Additionally, QB Fernando Mendoza won the Heisman Trophy.
Indiana will play their first game on Sept. 5 at Memorial Stadium in Bloomington at 11 am CST/noon EST against Texas.
