There was a whole lot of pressure on Clemson Tigers quarterback Christopher Vizzina heading into fall camp.
Vizzina has long been seen as the heir to Cade Klubnik, but there is a whole lot of uncertainty surrounding the redshirt junior, and he is facing stiff competition from true freshman Tait Reynolds.
I'm not sure anyone initially expected Reynolds to compete for the starting job, but the youngster clearly wowed head coach Dabo Swinney in spring practice, and he continues to make his case here in August.
That being said, Vizzina is still the favorite, and it seems like the former four-star recruit is certainly earning the respect of his teammates.
Just ask defensive tackle Markus Strong, who was left enamored by a deep pass Vizzina threw in practice on Friday.
“CV threw a deep ball, and it was just like the connection, like that chemistry was there, and it was like, ‘Okay!’ I appreciated that,” Strong said, via The Clemson Insider. “Even though I was on the field and I don’t want to see us give up nothing, but I know iron sharpens iron. So, in that heat of the moment, I know our DB is going to be there, but it’s like at the same time ‘Oh that’s a beauty of a ball.’"
Vizzina arrived at Clemson in 2023, but hasn't gotten a whole lot of playing time. He did make one start last year, going 29-for-42 with 317 yards and three touchdowns in a loss to SMU. But otherwise, we haven't seen much of him.
As a result, the jury is largely out on Vizzina, especially after the Tigers were so secure under center the previous three years with Klubnik calling the shots.
It also doesn't help that Clemson went 7-6 last season, so there is quite a bit of negativity surrounding the program in general right now.
But clearly, Vizzina is showing some very positive signs, and he definitely has a strong group of weapons at his disposal to make his job easier.
The Tigers will open the regular season against LSU on Sept. 5. It will be interesting to see how Vizzina fares in such a hostile road environment right off the bat.
