Texas A&M will kick off the 2026 season against Missouri State on Saturday, Sept, 5, as the Aggies are through nine preseason practices, and under first-year offensive coordinator Holmon Wiggins, quarterback Marcel Reed, who will enter his second full starting season, has slowly but surely improved after throwing for a career-high 3,169 yards, 25 touchdowns, and 12 interceptions last season.
While the Aggies made the College Football Playoff for the first time in program history, Reed's poor play in the final two games led to back-to-back losses to Texas and Miami in the first round of the CFP, with interceptions and zero combined touchdowns in both losses.
When facing top-35-ranked defenses last season, Reed produced just six touchdowns and eight of his twelve interceptions, mostly when dropping back with little movement in the pocket, which has never been the former blue-chip prospect's strength.
Under former OC Collin Klein, a 12-personnel scheme with two tight ends on the field was heavily used, taking a wide receiver out of the equation and forcing Marcel Reed to make quick decisions in the pocket with little movement, aside from evading pass rushers.
After Klein departed to take over as Kansas State's head coach, Holmon Wiggins, despite his lack of play-calling experience, is expected to get Marcel Reed outside the pocket in RPO looks much more often, allowing his elite wide receiver rotation to make plays after the catch.
This week, college football analyst Brooks Austin, who runs The Film Guy Network, broke down Marcel Reed's play during the 2025 season, focusing on A&M's 27-17 road loss to the Texas Longhorns, where the Aggie signal caller completed 20-of-32 for 180 yards and 2 interceptions.
