The Notre Dame football team has big expectations for the 2026 season, after missing the College Football Playoff last year. One Notre Dame player is getting a lot of praise this offseason. That is cornerback Leonard Moore, who is being listed as one of the most underrated players in college football.
“Moore, the No. 5 ranked player, is a projected top-10 draft pick in the 2027 NFL Draft, according to CBS Sports experts Mike Renner and Ryan Wilson. He is the heart of a Notre Dame defense that is expected to be among the nation’s best in 2026,” CBS Sports reported.
Moore will be expected to help anchor the Fighting Irish secondary during the 2026 season. Notre Dame plays as an independent in football, so the margin for error is very small. Notre Dame barely missed the CFP in 2025, after making the national championship game in 2024.

Moore finished the 2025 season with five interceptions. He established himself as one of the toughest corners in college football. He posted 31 total tackles, including 23 solo stops.
Marcus Freeman hopes to make the College Football Playoff again at Notre Dame
Notre Dame is led by head coach Marcus Freeman. Freeman is excited for the 2026 season to get started. He has been named as a possible candidate for NFL head coaching jobs, but has committed to the Fighting Irish.
“I plan on being here as long as I can,” Freeman said this offseason, per The Athletic. “If I do a good enough job and I’m able and wanted to be the head coach here, I want to stay the head coach here.”
Notre Dame will certainly be tested this season, with games against several power 4 opponents. The team’s schedule includes meetings with schools from the Big Ten, Big 12 and ACC.
Notre Dame kicks off their upcoming college football season with a game against Wisconsin. That contest is on September 6.
