Clark Lea has a major decision to make this offseason. Who will replace Diego Pavia as QB1 for Vanderbilt football? Vandy is coming off the best season in its school’s history, and both Jared Curtis and Blaze Berlowitz hope to take their first snaps of the season.
Now, there is an update on the quarterback competition, per Pete Nakos of On3.
The two quarterbacks both took part in a scrimmage this past weekend in Nashville, and Lea believes this is a tight competition.

I thought Jared probably had his best day, just start to finish, which is really positive,” Lea said. “He’s adapting to college football. He’s also playing against the defense and giving multiple looks, multiple pressure looks, and we’re not holding back in practice. So it’s been baptism by fire for him, but it seemed to slow down a little bit for him today, which is positive.”
Curtis was a five-star recruit in the 2026 recruiting cycle. He was initially committed to Georgia, but decided to flip his commitment to Vanderbilt, becoming the highest-ranked recruit to ever sign for Vandy. Meanwhile, Berlowitz is entering his senior season. He does not have a lot of experience, despite being a senior. He was the backup to Pavia in 2023 at New Mexico State, completing 10 of 19 passes for 134 yards with a touchdown and a pick. He moved with head coach Jerry Kill and Pavia to Vanderbilt in 2024. He did not see time in 2024, but completed nine of 17 passes for 131 yards and a touchdown in 2025.
Vanderbilt opens their season on September 5 against Austin Peay at home.
