Kansas State QB Avery Johnson Details What It's Like To Play For Collin Klein

It's often hard for the fans to get an inside look at their favorite players or coaches.
They only get what they see on the field and interviews. First-year Kansas State Wildcats coach Collin Klein tries to keep a low profile but quarterback Avery Johnson recently provided a look at what it's like to be one of his players.
Here's what Johnson said in an interview with Chancellor Johnson last month at Big 12 media days: “You better come with neck roll on, fingers taped, he’s going to come downhill at you.”
Johnson basically says Klein coaches like he played during his days as a quarterback at Kansas State during the early 2010s. If anyone knows Klein's personality, it's Johnson.
The two have one of the strongest relationships in college football. They have known each other since Klein helped recruit Johnson to Kansas State. Klein was an assistant in Manhattan before becoming the offensive coordinator at Texas A & M in 2024. After two seasons with the Aggies, he's back in familiar territory.
Klein has the task of returning the Wildcats back to national prominence. Last year they finished just 6-6. Although they were postseason-eligible, they declined a bowl invitation. It led to former coach Chris Klieman resigning after the season, which opened the door for Klein to return.
The Wildcats were predicted to finish eighth in the Big 12 by the league media. Klein is thinking much bigger. For that to happen, his transition from assistant to the head man in charge is vital. A lot will also weigh heavily on the progress of Johnson, who is entering his third season as the full-time starter.
After a solid sophomore season, he dealt with inconsistency at times last season. The hope is his strong bond with Klein will help the Wildcats compete for the league championship and a possible berth in the College Football Playoff.
