The Athletic produced their annual College Football Head Coach Tiers this week and Fran Brown remained in the same tier as he was last year.

Brown remains in Tier 5, which is labeled the “Up and Down” tier. It could be called the “ACC HC” tier as Brown, Jake Dickert, Tony Elliott, Mike Norvell, and Bill O’Brien all find themselves in this group. It’s interesting to note that Dickert is two tiers below new UCLA HC Bob Chesney despite what Dickert showed in a 9-4 debut season at Wake.

Curt Cignetti and Kirby Smart are the only two coaches in Tier 1. Mario Cristobal, James Franklin and Dabo Swinney are ranked in the “Proven Winners” of Tier Two along with Notre Dame’s Marcus Freeman. Jeff Brohm is the only ACC HC in Tier Three this season.

Tier Four features Manny Diaz, Pat Narduzzi and Dave Doeren and again it just speaks to the subjective nature of ranking head coaches. I feel like if you asked Duke and NC State fans to rank their HC’s, they would have wildly differing opinions. Expectations and outcomes don’t always mesh when it comes to fan satisfaction- something Syracuse knows all too well.

It seems as though this season is pivotal to the internal and external perception of Fran Brown’s coaching. What do Orange fans think about the 3rd year Head Coach?
