Ohio State head coach Ryan Day desperately wants the football season to start. Each and every day there is another Buckeye who lands on some kind of watch list heading into the year.
First, the Buckeyes are named as the Preseason No. 1 team in the country, then there was a slew of preseasonAll-Americans, a couple of guys on their respective position watch list, and now, the quarterback joins the bunch.
Buckeyes signal caller Julian Sayin was named to the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award Watch List. This award is given to the nation's top upperclassman quarterback who has shown leadership, character, integrity, citizenship, and athletic achievement on the field.
The award takes into account on-field success but also heavily factors in off-field character. In today's day and age of college football, the award also factors in sustained commitment to their teammates. Pretty easy to read between the lines on that last piece of criteria.
Sayin joins the list of all the best quarterbacks in America, and he is trying to show that he is at the top of that list.
Last year in his very first season playing, Sayin showed that he has the tools to be a really good quarterback. When the Buckeyes were the superior team on the field, he dominated the opponent.
Three separate times, he threw for over 300 yards and at least three touchdowns. He led America in completion percentage at 77 percent and had 32 touchdowns to boot.
His only question mark right now is: when the playing level is even, which Sayin comes out? Is it the one the world saw during the Michigan game? Or is the Sayin reality what we saw against Indiana and Miami to end their season?
If the former becomes the guy that we are used to, then it is going to be an incredible year to be a Buckeye. Ohio State will roll through their season and make a run in the College Football Playoff.
If all of that happens, expect Sayin to collect this award with ease. He checks every single box in terms of his character and would answer every question that is asked of him in terms of his play.
This is hopefully Sayin's last year as an Ohio State Buckeye. If he plays to the top of his potential, then he will hear his name called early in next year's NFL Draft. If that does happen, it will mean the Buckeyes had a great year, and Sayin will go down as one of the top quarterbacks in Ohio State history.
