Another Ohio State player has earned his stripes, or, to be more precise, shed his black stripe.

Senior cornerback Cam Calhoun lost his black stripe Thursday following practice. A former four-star recruit, Calhoun originally committed to Michigan where he redshirted during his freshman season. He then transferred to Utah for his sophomore season and, once more, to Alabama for his junior year. He played in 14 games for the Crimson Tide and totaled 144 tackles as a defensive back and on special teams. He transferred to Ohio State this past offseason.

With the Ohio State secondary one of the best in the country, Calhoun is expected to provide head coach Ryan Day with solid depth for the Buckeyes' secondary. He will provide experience in big games, which should be welcome as the team was named No. 1 in the preseason AP rankings and is expected to be a strong National Championship contender.

The black stripe tradition was introduced by former Ohio State head coach Urban Meyer, who brought it along from previous coaching stops. Freshmen, walk-ons, and incoming transfers wear a black stripe down the middle of their helmets. Once the coaching staff feels that said player has proven enough on and off the field, they take off the player's black stripe, and it becomes a celebration both within the program and via social media as they enter the "brotherhood."
