Marcel Reed isn’t entering 2026 as a breakout candidate anymore, he’s entering it as one of the most established quarterbacks in college football.

The Texas A&M senior quarterback was named to the preseason watch list for the Davey O’Brien Award, adding another major honor to a growing collection that already includes the Maxwell, Walter Camp and Johnny Unitas Golden Arm watch lists.

Through 27 career games and 21 starts, he has thrown for 5,407 yards and 41 touchdowns while completing 62 percent of his passes.

He’s also rushed for 1,085 yards and 14 scores, giving Texas A&M one of the most experienced dual-threat quarterbacks in the country.

That combination puts Reed in rare company.

He’s one of only eight returning FBS quarterbacks with at least 5,000 passing yards and 1,000 rushing yards, and one of just nine returning quarterbacks with more than 40 passing touchdowns and 14 rushing scores.

That’s proven production.

Reed has topped 300 yards of total offense nine times in his career and has accounted for multiple touchdowns in 17 games. He has thrown at least two touchdowns in 15 of his 27 appearances.

His ceiling has also been obvious.

Last season against South Carolina, Reed produced a career-high 452 total yards, including 439 passing yards. He has also delivered four-touchdown performances five different times and once rushed for three scores against LSU.

That kind of versatility gives Texas A&M a chance to stress defenses in multiple ways.

It also explains why expectations in College Station are getting louder.

Reed was a finalist for the Davey O’Brien Award in 2025, so this isn’t some speculative preseason nod. He’s already been recognized as one of the nation’s best quarterbacks.

Now comes the harder part, finishing the job.

Texas A&M has the pieces to make noise in the SEC, and Reed is the engine that makes the whole thing go.

If he improves his consistency as a passer while maintaining the rushing threat that has made him so difficult to defend, this could be the season when Reed stops being mentioned as one of the best quarterbacks in college football.

He could actually prove it.
