Avon has some pretty good backs and receivers who have helped the River Hawks advance to the Class D high school football state tournament quarterfinals.
So, it is no surprise that the Newfane running backs, receivers and quarterbacks have the attention of Avon coach Andy Englert.
Newfane (11-0), the Section VI Class D champion, and Avon (9-2) meet in a state quarterfinal Nov. 21 in Buffalo.
"We have to make sure that we tackle," Englert said about the River Hawks defense.
The Panthers have players who can gain high amounts of yards in a single play, starting with quarterback Mac Capen. These big-yardage plays these days are called "chunk plays."
Capen, a senior, averages 13.9 yards a carry and has scored 25 touchdowns for the Panthers. Camlo Flowers is the team's second-leading leading rusher at just 418 yards but averages 6.7 yards a carry.
Flowers has scored six touchdowns, one less than third-leading rusher Camryn Stover, who gains 7.2 yards a carry.
