HOLLYWOOD — Jacksonville Mandarin quarterback Knox Annis has been a member of the Hurricanes’ 2028 recruiting class since April, and he wants his star receiver to join him.

That receiver, five-star Brysen Wright, is the No. 1 player in the 2028 class, according to 247Sports’ composite rankings. Annis is working hard to get Wright to commit to the Hurricanes.

“Every day,” Annis said on Friday after Mandarin beat McArthur in the first game of the Broward County High School National Football Showcase. “I’m trying to get him to come every day. … (I tell him) that really we’re building something special. The offense is going to get him the ball and … come play with me again.”

Said Wright: “He recruited me a lot. That’s my dog.”

Annis, a three-star prospect who is the No. 34 quarterback in the class, said he is secure in his own commitment to Miami.

“It stands strong,” Annis said. “The staff, what they’re building, what they do with quarterbacks that are going to the next level.”

Wright is still considering his options. He said Miami is one team stands out to him along with Florida, Ohio State and Texas. Wright said the Hurricanes are “one of the top” teams because of his relationship with the coaches, which is something he values highly. He said he is also looking beyond football when picking his college destination.

“Really something I can always look back on after football,” Wright said. “Football is not always going to last. So just a place, a home, I could really count on — if football (doesn’t) work out, (a place) I can go back to.”

Wright, who plays safety as well as wide receiver, had an interception on the opening play of the game. He had a deep catch that set up one Mandarin touchdown and made a one-handed snag for a score of his own. As a sophomore in 2025, he had 46 catches for 983 yards and 10 touchdowns.

“He’s unreal,” Annis said. “He does everything.”

The Hurricanes are working on building a star-studded group of wide receivers. Miami will likely have star receiver Malachi Toney for one more season before he turns pro. They added three four-star recruits in last year’s recruiting class. UM has a pair of five-star prospects from South Florida, Nick Lennear and A’mir Sears, committed in the 2027 class.

Wright joining the 2028 class would help keep the receiver room stocked with talent.

“Everybody already knows how (playing with Lennear and Sears) would be,” Wright said. “But we would go crazy, for sure.”
