Any questions about how efficient BGA's offense would be without quarterback Kaedyn Marable were answered with first-time starter Bo Bryan.

Bryan, son of country music star Luke Bryan, was sharp, picking apart St. Michael Catholic's defense as BGA rolled to a 41-18 win to open the 2026 TSSAA football season on Aug. 22 in Fairhope, Alabama. Bryan was 16-of-21 for 382 yards and three touchdowns in front of a nationally televised audience on ESPN2.

Bryan had the help of wide receiver duo Maximus Curry and Maddox Porter. Porter had over 100 yards receiving in the first half while the four-star Curry had touchdown catches of 78 and 80 yards. Porter finished with eight receptions for 140 yards and a touchdown. Curry had five catches for 191 yards and two TDs.

St. Michael Catholic played much of the game without starting quarterback Gunner Rivers — son of former NFL quarterback and St. Michael coach Philip Rivers. He was injured late in the first quarter as his team got into the red zone. Rivers scrambled out of the pocket and was hit in the leg and stayed on the ground for several minutes before being helped off the field. He was taken to the locker room for evaluation and returned to the sideline in the second half without his shoulder pads and helmet. He finished the game 4-of-5 passing for 85 yards and a touchdown.

St. Michael managed to get within 28-18 midway through the fourth quarter, but Bo Bryan hit Curry on a short wide receiver screen and Curry did the rest, cutting through St. Michael's defense for 80 yards to extend BGA's lead. Running back Fletcher Fields added an 8-yard TD minutes later to push the game to 41-18. Fields would finish with 78 yards rushing and two TDs.

Bryan (6-foot-1, 190 pounds) showcased his accuracy and had time to throw, stepping up in the pocket to deliver pinpoint passes with his father in the stands. The senior holds offers from Austin Peay, Eastern Kentucky, East Tennessee State, North Alabama and Tennessee Martin.

Bryan steps into the TSSAA football spotlight after spending the past two seasons behind Marable, who guided BGA to the Division II-AA state championship over FRA last December.

Third-year BGA coach Bobby Bentley has not lost a season opener with the program. The Wildcats will travel to face Columbia Academy in Week 2 on Aug. 28.
