Texas football dismissed linebacker Ty'Anthony Smith this week for conduct detrimental to the team, coach Steve Sarkisian confirmed to media on Aug. 22.

Smith, who was going into his junior season with the Longhorns after playing 29 games in his first two years, logged 76 total tackles with Texas and had three interceptions.

The school didn't elaborate further on the reason for Smith's dismissal.

“He was dismissed," Sarkisian said of Smith. "Conduct detrimental to the team, and that’s just what it is. I didn't like it. It's an unfortunate situation. I hate that. For us as a team, I hate that. He's a quality player, but I have to think about the team first."

Anwar Richardson of Orangebloods, who initially reported Smith's dismissal, noted Smith's participation in practice was inconsistent in recent weeks. It was a personal matter that led to Smith being let go from the squad, with the addition of transfers Rasheem Biles and Justin Cryer adding uncertainty to his role on the roster.

Sarkisian added that Smith's departure creates a depth problem at linebacker, but it's something Texas has mitigated by rarely having three linebackers on the field.

“From the linebacker perspective, you know, when you really think about it, and you think about the amount of nickel you really play in season and what that looks like, you’re thinking about two backers the majority of time on the field," he said. "… But we also know we’ve got great experience in Cryer and Biles, and Brad Spence is an experienced guy who gives us position flex and versatility, but guys are going to have to grow into certain roles."

Texas will open its season Sept. 5 against Texas State.
