Not too long ago, Art Sitkowski was the Illinois quarterback fighting for playing time. The New Jersey native still looks like he can sling it.

But instead, he is Barry Lunney Jr.'s, quarterback coach, helping the team fill the gap left by Luke Altmyer's departure. It isn't easy to replace one of the most productive players in program history, but the Illinois staff hopes it has the answer in East Carolina transfer Katin Houser.

One of six team captains for 2026, Houser looked sharp during Saturday's practice at Gies Memorial Stadium. For the first time all training camp, the entire session was open to the media.

Of course, I watched Houser. And the backup competition between Carson Boyd and Michael Clayton II.

In Tolono, the quarterback interest centers on No. 12, Unity alum Dane Eisenmenger. He joined the team in the summer and has made a good impression on the staff.

"He's been awesome," Sitkowski said. "He's been like a true sponge. Dane's come in here and he's trying to learn everything he possibly can.

"He's phenomenal in meeting rooms. He loves football. He's got his pencil. He's got his eyes located toward the front of the screen, eager, hungry, he's been a great addition to the room."

Can he someday play at Illinois?

"Absolutely," Sitkowski said. "I think all four of those guys can play at this level."
