The Ohio State football team is on a mission in 2026 to return to the College Football Playoff national championship game. The Buckeyes are led on offense by quarterback Julian Sayin, who is getting a ton of preseason hype.

Sayin and Ohio State face Ball State to open the season. Ball State is naming a starting quarterback for that contest.

“Sources: Ball State has named Keldric Luster the starting quarterback, and he’ll open the season at No. 1 Ohio State. He’s a transfer from both Texas State and SMU,” ESPN reporter Pete Thamel posted to X, formerly Twitter.

Ball State will attempt to post a massive upset victory in that game. The Buckeyes enter the 2026 campaign with CFP expectations.

Sayin is one of the reasons why. The young quarterback had a fantastic 2025 season, leading Ohio State to the CFP. He posted 3,610 passing yards, while tossing 32 touchdown passes.

The Ohio State quarterback thinks his offense can surprise some people this year. He especially is impressed with his wide receiver corps.

“I think it’s helpful when you are able to sub receivers in and out and keep guys fresh. It’s hard on a defense because they are rarely subbing corners a bunch,” Sayin said, per The Athletic. “To be able to have guys who are really talented out there — and we have a bunch of them — it’s what you want as a quarterback.”

Ohio State also looks to up the tempo this season with Sayin under center.

“We have to find the right balance,” Buckeyes head coach Ryan Day said. “Some teams, they live in tempo and all the different things that come with that. For us, we want to have the ability to do both, so we have to figure out what’s right in the moment and utilize it when appropriate.”

The Buckeyes play Ball State to open the 2026 campaign on September 5.
