Michigan OC on QB Bryce Underwood’s running prowess: ‘Don’t be Superman’

Michigan quarterback Bryce Underwood has the potential to be a player who can do it all at the position — a dual-threat QB who has a rocket arm and blazing speed. However, Underwood will have to limit the amount of hits he takes when he decides to tuck it and run, which is something Michigan offensive coordinator Jason Beck is cognizant of.

“It goes back to the running,” Beck said last week. “Don’t be Superman and try to run through people and take unnecessary hits and that kind of thing. As well as not forcing the ball into windows.”

Beck noted that every practice has been a good one for Underwood, and it appears he’s not trying to overcomplicate things for the young quarterback when it comes to running the ball.

“Make the normal plays. Make the routine plays. When everything breaks down, extend it, scramble, get what you can get,” Beck said. “We work a lot of scramble drills to train them with that and those decisions as well.”

Underwood rushed for 392 yards last season with six rushing scores, numbers that could increase with Beck as Michigan’s offensive coordinator. With Beck as OC of Utah last season, quarterback Devon Dampier rushed for 835 yards and 10 rushing scores. There’s a strong chance Michigan will dial up more designed runs with Underwood in 2026, something they didn’t do much of last season. However, it will be a major point of emphasis to keep Michigan’s star quarterback healthy from the beginning of the season until the end.
