The line separating college football and the NFL continues to blur, and one football analyst believes head coaches must take responsibility for preserving the integrity of the college programs.

Brooks Austin sharply criticized programs pursuing athletes from the professional ranks, arguing that players who sign NFL contracts or enter training camps should permanently forfeit their NCAA eligibility.

Analyst Raises Concern Over NFL Players Returning to College

The debate intensified after the SEC issued a statement on Monday, arguing that athletes who leave college to pursue professional football should not be permitted to return to college.

Austin criticized the statement as ineffective without strict enforcement. “A bunch of nothing. A bunch of nothing right about now, except for, ‘Hey, don’t do that,’” he said.

Austin believes the moment a player officially enters the professional ranks, his college career should be over. “If you put on an NFL jersey, if you go to an NFL training camp, if you declare for the NFL draft, if you are a professional athlete, you are done. The die is cast. It is over with, all right? Your college eligibility ceased to exist.”

He also challenged college coaches to show more restraint, arguing that having the ability to recruit former NFL players does not necessarily mean they should do so.

“I’m asking the grown men, the head football coaches, I don’t know, maybe start behaving. Maybe just because you can doesn’t mean you should,” he said.

Austin specifically referenced programs led by Kentucky Wildcats coach Will Stein, LSU Tigers coach Lane Kiffin, Texas Longhorns coach Steve Sarkisian, and others for taking advantage of the situation.

He reiterated that adding NFL players damages the sport’s foundation. In his view, coaches cannot exploit every available loophole while expecting college football to keep its traditional structure. “Start behaving. If nothing’s going to govern you, then you need to govern yourselves,” Austin added.

He also praised University of Oregon head coach Dan Lanning for swimming against the tide and publicly arguing that players who sign NFL contracts should not be allowed to return to college football.

The debate ultimately extends beyond individual coaches or players. College football is still navigating the evolving NIL landscape, the transfer portal, and increasingly sophisticated approaches to roster management.

If conferences and governing bodies do not establish clearer boundaries, coaches will continue to decide for themselves where those lines should be drawn.
