The LSU football team has made lots of news this summer, as Lane Kiffin gets ready to take the field as the Tigers head coach. Kiffin is making a bold statement about one of his new players. That is LSU quarterback Sam Leavitt.
“Sam Leavitt battled back from injury and he’s so competitive.. He’s focused on being great and he’s got a chip on his shoulder,” Kiffin said on The Pat McAfee Show.

During the 2025 season with Arizona State, Leavitt threw for 1,628 passing yards. He suffered an injury that shortened his season. He transferred out of the Sun Devils program following the 2025 campaign.
Kiffin comes to LSU with high expectations from fans. He takes over a program that had underachieved under the previous head coach, Brian Kelly.
LSU football made a controversial decision in recent days, after the Tigers agreed to bring a former NFL player to Baton Rouge. Former Ole Miss tight end Dae’Quan Wright is set to join LSU. He played this summer with the Cleveland Browns.
Following the move, the Big Ten, ACC and Big 12 are moving to block NFL players from joining the rosters of their league members. The SEC is also investigating, as its league rules may not allow the addition of Wright.
Despite all of that, Kiffin defended that decision.
“They’re available to recruit. So, ourselves, like many places around the country, are recruiting them,” Kiffin said, per the Associated Press.
Kiffin has had success as a college football head coach. He won at Ole Miss, before heading to LSU. Kiffin famously left Mississippi when his team was getting ready in 2025 for a College Football Playoff appearance.
LSU kicks off their 2026 season against Clemson, on September 5.
