How Ryder Gravenhof sparked GVSU football past Wayne State with big play

The No. 25 Grand Valley State football team bounced back after last week’s loss to Ferris State and clobbered Wayne State 59-13 on Saturday, Nov. 1.

The Lakers trailed 13-3 before scoring 56 unanswered points to close out the scoring.

GVSU rushed for six touchdowns, recovered a fumbled snap in the end zone and returned an interception 90 yards for a touchdown.

The Laker defense forced a fumble that defensive end Ryder Gravenhof, of Holland, recovered at the Warrior 8-yard line.

Senior running back Syone Usma-Harper carried the ball three times on the ensuing drive, the final being a 1-yard TD run and kicker Mathew Bacik it the extra points for a 17-6 halftime lead.

The Lakers put 28 points on the scoreboard in the third quarter. Following a Wayne State fumble that defensive tackle Jibriel Conde recovered at the Wayne State 45-yard line, the Lakers need just two plays to score. Schuster hit Lynn Wyche-El with a 22-yard completion and Paschal Jolman rambled 23 yards for a touchdown. The GVSU defense forced a three-and-out to force a Wayne State punt and the Lakers’ Anthony Scott recovered a fumbled snap in the end zone for a touchdown to up the Laker lead to 31-6.

Kenneth Jones rushed for a 1-yard touchdown before cornerback Jason Hardy returned an interception 90 yards for a touchdown. Quarterback Zak Olejniczak rushed for a 5-yard touchdown and Kellen Russell-Dixon rushed for a 2-yard touchdown to conclude the scoring.

Starting quarterback Andrew Schuster completed 17-of-26 passes for 256 yards to lead the passing game. Kellen Reed caught five passes for 70 yards, Wyche-El hauled in four passes for 81 yards. Russell-Dixon led the ground game with nine carries for 61 yards.

The GVSU defense recorded nine tackles for loss and four sacks. Linebacker Torian Wyatt tallied eight tackles, while senior linebacker Anthony Cardamone recorded seven stops, 1.5 QB sacks and 1.5 tackles for losses.

The Lakers host Michigan Tech next week for homecoming.
