Ranking college football's best secondaries for 2026

College football is loaded with top-end defensive backs in 2026, with names like Leonard Moore, KJ Bolden and Bray Hubbard returning to school.
While having a lockdown cornerback is a luxury not many teams have, having depth in the secondary is even more rare — especially in the current era of roster building with NIL and the transfer portal.
Trusting a defensive back to be on an island in man-to-man coverage with an opposing receiver opens up a world of possibilities for a defense, especially in college football.
Each of these five teams have top-tier talent and depth that sets them apart from the rest of the sport. Here’s a look at USA TODAY Sports’ best secondaries heading into the 2026 season:
1. Alabama
Alabama not only has one of the most talented secondaries in college football, but also one of the most experienced.
The Crimson Tide returns five starters from last season in its secondary, led by Hubbard and cornerback Zabien Brown, both of whom were full-time starters in 2025. They’re joined by safety Keon Sabb, cornerback Dijon Lee and projected nickelback Red Morgan, all of whom started games last season.
A preseason All-American by numerous outlets, Hubbard is one of the best playmaking defenders in college football. The former high school quarterback earned first-team All-SEC honors last season after finishing with 74 total tackles, three forced fumbles and four interceptions.
Brown was a gamechanger, too, with a pick-six last season against Tennessee and Oklahoma, the latter in the College Football Playoff. Altogether, Alabama returns 81 combined starts from its five projected starters this season.
2. Notre Dame
Moore gains loads of attention for being the consensus best cornerback in America and one of the top prospects for the 2027 NFL Draft, but the Fighting Irish collectively make up one of the best defensive back units in college football thanks to plenty of NFL talent.
Tae Johnson emerged as one of the best safeties in college football in his first year as a full-time starter in 2025, with 48 total tackles and four interceptions. Colorado transfer DJ McKinney will line up opposite him after registering 95 total tackles with four interceptions in two seasons with the Buffaloes, while Johnson will be joined by Adon Shuler, a team captain with two interceptions and two fumbles in 2025.
Notre Dame’s defense will be very multiple this season, thanks to its secondary’s ability in coverage.
3. Georgia
Bolden leads a Georgia secondary that has loads of talent. A preseason All-American, Bolden has elite speed at safety for the Bulldogs, and is regarded as the top safety prospect in the 2027 NFL Draft after tallying 76 total tackles with two interceptions and seven passes deflected.
He’ll be joined by top cornerback Ellis Robinson IV, a former five-star recruit who finished 2025 with four interceptions. Demello Jones also returns at cornerback along with Oklahoma transfer Gentry Williams, an uber-talented defender who has battled a slew of injuries in his career.
Georgia also brought in East Carolina transfer Ja’Marley Riddle, a projected starter at safety after recording 133 total tackles with six interceptions in two seasons with the Pirates. Athens native Khalil Barnes is also expected to play a large role in the secondary after transferring in from Clemson, where he had seven interceptions in three seasons.
4. Oregon
Oregon returns lockdown cornerback Brandon Finney Jr. from last year’s team, but also made a splash in the transfer portal with safety Koi Perich, an All-Big Ten performer at Minnesota who's replacing first-round pick Dillon Thieneman.
Perich’s play-making ability is notable, with six interceptions and two forced fumbles in his first two seasons with the Golden Gophers. He's also a standout returner, and was even used sparingly in special offensive packages at Minnesota.
Finney is expected to take an even bigger leap in 2026, especially after earning All-Big Ten second-team honors last season as a true freshman. The former five-star recruit started all 15 games for the Ducks, and is on all sorts of preseason All-American teams heading into his sophomore year.
Oregon’s secondary is rounded out with cornerback Ify Obidegwu, safety Aaron Flowers and nickelback Carl Williams IV, a first-year transfer from Baylor. Flowers was one of Oregon’s best downhill gap-fillers last season, finishing the year with 69 tackles and two forced fumbles.
5. Miami
Miami’s secondary is led by returning starter Romanas “OJ” Frederique Jr., who could end up as one of the top cornerback prospects of the 2027 NFL Draft. He’s joined by returning starters Xavier Lucas and Ethan O’Connor, who both transferred in from Wisconsin and Washington State, respectively, last season.
Safeties Bryce Fitzgerald and Zechariah Poyser also return as starters, with Fitzgerald earning more responsibility after being a freshman All-American in 2025. Not many teams have two players as solid as O’Connor and Lucas sharing cornerback duties next to Frederique, but that’s why the Hurricanes are expected to be national championship contenders again this season.
