COLUMBIA — South Carolina football coach Shane Beamer is trying to avoid his worst record with the Gamecocks, but there has been no public or formal declaration that his job is at risk.
Beamer, in Year 5, is facing Coastal Carolina on Nov. 22 (4:15 p.m., SEC Network) amid a five-game losing streak with the Gamecocks (3-7).
If Beamer wins out, he will tie his 5-7 record from 2023. The season ends with the annual game against Clemson on Nov. 29 (noon ET, SEC Network) in Williams-Brice Stadium.
South Carolina was voted preseason No. 13 in the country in both the US LBM Football Coaches Poll and AP Top 25.
Beamer finished 9-3 in 2024, his best record since arriving in 2020. This is the first full season with athletic director Jeremiah Donati, who took over for Ray Tanner in January, and Beamer stated he feels “extremely” supported by Donati and Senior Deputy Director of Athletics Jeff Crane.
What Shane Beamer said about South Carolina’s 2025 record
South Carolina had a 27-3 lead over No. 3 Texas A&M on Nov. 15 but 28 unanswered points across just two quarters gave the Aggies a 31-30 win. Before that game, SEC teams were 0-286 since 2004 when trailing by at least 27 points, according to ESPN Research.
The brutal loss was just the most recent example of the Gamecocks’ fourth-quarter crumbles from this season. Before this year Beamer was 24-5 when leading after three quarters but is 3-3 in 2025, which Beamer said “makes him want to puke.”.
From Oct. 11 to Nov. 15, the Gamecocks faced five top-15 teams, with the largest margin of defeat 19 to Oklahoma (26-9).
“I don’t know why we’re going through it,” Beamer said. “I don’t know why we’ve had this heartbreak that we’ve had, but we will be better and stronger and hardened because of it as we go into next season.”
Is Shane Beamer worried about getting fired by South Carolina?
Four SEC coaches have been fired this season: Arkansas‘ Sam Pittman, Florida’s Billy Napier, LSU’s Brian Kelly and Auburn’s Hugh Freeze.
After Beamer fired offensive coordinator Mike Shula on Nov. 2, the second mid-season firing he’s made since October, he addressed his job security.
“Well, what do you think,” Beamer said when asked how important it is to get wins on the board before it’s “his name on the chopping block.” He continued, saying “I think that kind of speaks for itself. This is a bottom-line business, and right now, we’re not good enough, and I think you understand that.”
Shane Beamer declares College Football Playoff future for South Carolina
Last year, the Gamecocks finished on a six-game win streak and wanted a spot in the College Football Playoff but this year did not make a bowl game.
“We’re not there right now but I do know next year at this time we’re going to be sitting here on this Tuesday night watching the playoff rankings to see where we are,” Beamer said Nov. 18. “We’re going to be firmly in the mix for a college football playoff berth next year at this time.”
He added this team feels sick about how the season has gone but will finish out 2025 the right way.
