Rutgers needs to pile up the wins in a hurry, and UMass is just looking to pile up one win.
The Scarlet Knights miss Ohio State and Oregon, but they have to deal with most of the other top teams in the Big Ten. Getting to six wins will be a fight, and they might need to beat Boston College next week. That’s what the tune-up against UMass is for.
The Minutemen are coming off a winless 2025, but the team is better and should be a bit more than a speed bump.

Why UMass Will Win
There really is reason to hope for something better in the second year under head coach Joe Harasymiak. It starts by basing everything off his time as the Rutgers defensive coordinator under current head man Greg Schiano.
Run well, keep the mistakes to a minimum, and stay in games. It helps to have an improved set of skill parts, starting with quarterback William Watson III from Virginia Tech. Why Rutgers Will Win
UMass has light years to go to be even mediocre.
Its offense was among the worst in college football, the defense was worse, and then there’s the scoring – UMass didn’t do it. The Minutemen were outscored 77-6 in the first quarters of games and managed more than 14 points against just one FBS team last season.
This year’s Scarlet Knight offense should be the best yet in the second run of the Greg Schiano era, with Boston College transfer quarterback Dylan Lonergan working with a good group of veteran receivers.
Rutgers could turn the lights out in a hurry.

This is more about the Rutgers defense than the offense.
The offense is fine and should work – UMass really is better, but it still won’t generate any sort of a pass rush. The Scarlet Knight defense was a mess last season. It brought in a slew of new parts for new defensive coordinator Travis Johansen to work with, and it has to rock right away.
