While Texas A&M football lost much production to the NFL Draft, the Aggies also lost both coordinators, one of whom they will face in Week 3 at Kyle Field.
After spending the last two seasons in Aggieland, the defensive coordinator will be on the opposite side of the gridiron coaching the Wildcats in a couple of weeks. Former Oregon offensive coordinator and new Kentucky head coach Will Stein hired Bateman to take over the defensive unit when he took the job in Lexington, as he looks to rebuild what's been a lackluster football program over the last few seasons.
With an offensive mastermind at the helm, a talented transfer quarterback and a slew of experienced coordinators and assistants, the Wildcats could make waves and pull some upsets in Stein's first year.
On the third day of the 12-day, 12-opponent series, here is our preview of Texas A&M's matchup against Kentucky in College Station on Sept. 19.
Tale of the tape: Kentucky's defense
Defensive coordinator: Jay Bateman
Defensive style: 4-2-5
Bateman was outstanding in his role as the Aggies' defensive coordinator over the last two seasons. He is inheriting what's been an underrated Kentucky defensive line, which includes veteran defensive tackle Tavion Gadson, who racked up 28 total tackles, four tackles for loss and 2.5 sacks last year. Gadson's dominance and ability to wreak havoc in the trenches is something Texas A&M's new-look offensive line must be prepared for to protect junior quarterback Marcel Reed. Kentucky also boasts two of the most experienced safeties in the SEC: Ty Bryant and Jordan Castell.
Tale of the tape: Kentucky's offense
Offensive coordinator: Joe Sloan/Will Stein
Offensive style: Pro-style
Stein and Sloan have coached some of the most talented quarterbacks in college football. During his time at LSU, Sloan coached Heisman-winning gunslinger Jayden Daniels, while Stein has mentored Oregon quarterbacks like Bo Nix, Dillon Gabriel and Dante Moore. To get Kentucky's offense back rolling, Stein brought in Notre Dame transfer signal-caller Kenny Minchey, who is an underrated dual-threat. He also picked up former Texas running back CJ Baxter, who flashed his potential before suffering a hamstring injury with the Longhorns in 2025. The Wildcats' offense has the coaching staff and explosive weapons to be a dangerous unit in the conference this season.
Game Prediction
Score prediction: Texas A&M 30 | Kentucky 17
Kentucky is a dangerous and extremely overlooked SEC squad entering 2026. The Wildcats have a plethora of new pieces and a new coaching staff, but they have the talent to make waves in Stein's first season at the helm. They are in the rebuilding stages, however. Texas A&M will host Kentucky in an afternoon contest at Kyle Field, which will mark Minchey's second SEC start, with his first coming against the Alabama Crimson Tide in Week 2. The key to this matchup for the Aggies starts with the secondary. Minchey has a talented arm and can sling it all over the field, but his speed and athletic ability could cause some headaches for the defensive line. I like Texas A&M to secure its first SEC win of the 2026 season and start 3-0, but the conference needs to be on the lookout for these Wildcats.
