LSU football's offer to Ole Miss head coach Lane Kiffin would make Kiffin one of the top-paid coaches in the sport and arm Kiffin with top roster-building resources.
Late Friday, Yahoo Sports' Ross Dellenger reported on the specifics of LSU's offer. Dellenger said LSU was finalizing a deal worth $90 million, with promises of a $25 million annual budget for the roster. That would give Kiffin one of the highest-paid rosters in the sport year in and year out.
"While specific details of the contract remain fluid, sources told Yahoo Sports that school executives have discussed a seven-year, incentive-laden deal worth at least $90 million — figures that would make Kiffin, at the very least, tied for the highest-paid coach in the sport. The school is, as well, promising significant NIL and revenue share roster investments exceeding $25 million — perhaps the most important determining factor for the coach," Dellenger wrote.
LSU isn't the only team pursuing Kiffin. Florida also made Kiffin priority No. 1 on its coaching search. Ole Miss made a strong push to keep Kiffin, too. Pressure mounted in the last week as noise built around Kiffin and the Ole Miss program. Stakeholders at LSU, Florida, and Ole Miss want Kiffin to make up his mind.
Kiffin met with Ole Miss brass on Friday. After the meeting, Ole Miss AD Keith Carter released a statement and said an announcement on Kiffin's future would be made after the Egg Bowl on Nov. 28.
Further complicating the process is Ole Miss's playoff contention. The Rebels are 10-1 and ranked No. 6 in the CFP Rankings. If Kiffin leaves for another job, he wouldn't get to coach Ole Miss in the playoff. That's a lot for a coach to give up.
LSU is all in on Kiffin, but if the Tigers miss, Missouri head coach Eli Drinkwitz is the rumored backup plan.
