Texas Tech football drew new interest into its quarterback situation Wednesday. Ex-Florida State quarterback Tommy Castellanos officially joined the Red Raiders following his high-profile move back to college. Which now raises a new question involving Will Hammond.
Is the former FSU dual-threat Castellanos now the starter?
College football insider Pete Nakos cleared the air there following the College Football Transfer Portal move.

“Castellanos will arrive at Texas Tech as Will Hammond’s backup,” Nakos posted on the social media website X, formerly Twitter.
So Hammond’s job is safe even amid this move made possible by a landmark injunction. Castellanos joins a long list of undrafted NFL rookies aiming for another collegiate shot. All thanks to one Louisiana judge ruling in favor of some 2022 prep graduates seeking a fifth eligibility season.
However, Castellanos avoids getting denied a new playing opportunity compared to SEC schools. The SEC enforced its own ruling that prohibits athletes from coming back after previously declaring for the NFL Draft, plus other major sports drafts. This rule also includes players who signed a previous contract with a pro sports franchise. The Big Ten also followed suit with a similar ruling.
Yet Castellanos goes free and clear as he heads to Lubbock. Which also includes theories he’ll play another position as Hammond becomes entrenched with QB1 duties. Castellanos gave wide receiver a try with the Tennessee Titans but that experiment never manifested.
He’s joining the reigning Big 12 champions who are seeking a return to the College Football Playoffs this season.
