The Canyonero Keys to Victory for every Miami Hurricanes game in 2026

After a perfect 10-2 prediction for the 2024 season, I missed the 2025 regular season outcome by one game.
“My way too early 2025 prediction is 9-3 for the Hurricanes and another December without a trip to Charlotte for the ACC Championship Game.”
I was right about missing the shot at Charlotte, that went to UVA and Duke, but wrong about 9-3 as the ‘Canes finished 10-2. I even predicted the “Cadillac of Games” as SMU and Louisville; and that the Hurricanes would have to win a Bully Ball war against Marcus Freeman’s Notre Dame Fighting Irish.
So the Hurricanes finished 10-2 in the regular season, missed the ACC Championship Game, made the CFB Playoff, and went on an absolute tear winning all three playoff games before losing to Indiana in the National Championship Game.
That means the Hurricanes beat FSU, UF, Notre Dame, Ohio State, Ole Miss, and Texas A&M throughout the 2025 campaign. DAMN!
The 2026 Season
The Hurricanes regular season is much easier than in 2025. Gone are Florida, SMU and Louisville. In their stead is a road trip to Death Valley to face Clemson and a return trip to South Bend to face Notre Dame. That means three talented opponents are out and only one is in.
Miami should finish at worst 11-1 and at best 12-0 before their first trip to Charlotte since the 2017 beatdown against the Clemson Tigers under Mark Richt.
There’s a home game against Central Michigan and an idle week sandwiching the FSU game, but a weird Halloween road trip against UNC and hosting Duke sandwiched around the trip to Touchdown Jesus and the Irish.
Miami gets two plucky pests in the Pitt Panthers and Virginia Tech Hokies both at home, but the ‘Canes do have to open the season in Silicon Valley against the Stanford Cardinal on the Friday before Labor Day.
The Hurricanes recruiting classes have been 9th, 14th, and 5th over the past three seasons per 247 Sports. On top of that Miami has been relying on the transfer portal to fill a couple of holes (starting QB, edge rusher) and to upgrade one position room (DB in ‘25, WR in ‘26). This roster will be predominantly made up of MIAMI GUYS and I for one am excited for that.
Both the OC in ShannonDawson and the DC in Corey Hetherman return for the Hurricanes. Both coordinators have put up some incredible numbers for Head Coach MarioCristobal. In ‘24 Miami had the best offense in the country and the NFL Draft’s no.1 overall pick in QB CamWard. Last season the defense held opponents to 14.8 PPG and that’s after playing the 4th toughest schedule in all of college football.
The 2024 unexplained fires were against Georgia Tech and Syracuse. In 2025 they were more expected fires, like a check engine light that was being ignored by Cristobal finally causing the engine to seize up and leave you on the phone with AAA waiting for a tow, in losing to SMU and Louisville.
This time my Biff Tannen almanac says the Hurricanes will finish the season 11-1.
Miami has to win Bully Ball against…
The Hurricanes will have another slugfest with the Notre Dame Fighting Irish. Both teams have weak schedules outside of games against each other. Both teams are loaded with NFL talent and return both coordinators. This time the game is in South Bend, not Hard Rock.
The Irish face three preseason ranked opponents in BYU (road game), Miami and SMU (both at home). The ‘Canes face one preseason ranked opponent, Notre Dame, clearly on the road.
The Hurricanes will be their strongest on obvious passing downs, something CJCarr struggled with at times and ND has to fix this off-season. Miami’s weak point will be the defensive ends against the run- Damon Wilson II and MarquisLightfoot are pure pass rushers.
While the Irish lost both RB’s to the NFL, they do return RB Aneyas Williams, OG AnthoineKnapp, and the mobile-enough-to-give-you-fits Carr. This is going to be a hell of a game, in primetime on NBC, but I do think the Irish prevail by 3.
Bully Ball should work just fine
Stanford, Florida A&M, Central Michigan and Boston College are games where Miami should just stick their foot on the gas and drive right over those annoying little smart cars (Stanford), and sedans in their way. Three of Miami’s first four games of the season should be tune-up type games where the rookies get some playing time in meaningful college football contests.
I’d like to see Luke Nickel, Jordan Lyle, JJ Dunnigan, and Luka Gilbert get some serious burn in the first three of four games. Miami has done a terrible job of getting young QB’s real snaps in games dating back to Mark Richt, and that needs to change. You’re one ankle away from Luke Nickel starting against Wake Forest, or even worse, Clemson or FSU.
The Gunners
Wake Forest and Pitt are always going to be those ‘worrisome’ chuck it deep teams. Wake now has GioLopez at quarterback, an upgrade over last season. Pitt returns MasonHeintschel who struggled against the ‘Canes in ‘25 but will have more experience heading into the ‘26 season as he was the backup to open the season a year ago.
“Gunner” games are games that Miami should win, but the defense has to be ready for trick plays, deep shots, and a wide open passing attack- which really plays into Miami’s hand with their pass rushers and DB room.
Avoid self-implosion
Florida State, Duke, and UNC are games Miami absolutely should win but could get tricky. I mean that FSU game was tricky last year towards the end and the ‘Noles were terrible. Duke has no QB (because Miami has DarianMensah on their side) and UNC really has no QB (Lopez is at Wake).
The Duke game is a MannyDiaz revenge spot and UNC is in Chapel Hill on Halloween. Just don’t screw it up and you’ve got yourself a W here.
Head down and drive
Ah, the Virginia Tech Hokies. Even under BrentPry as head coach the Hokies gave Miami some fits. Now with 30 new players, JamesFranklin running the show, and Pry back as a DC (weird!) the Hokies will be a game to not lose sight of. QB EthanGrunkemeyer is mobile, likes deep shots, and has seven games of starting experience from the ‘25 season (he went 4-3 after Frankling was fired).
The Va. Tech game is at home, which helps the ‘Canes, and the Hokies could be 6-4 as they head south to Hard Rock.
The Cadillac of Games goes to…
Five years ago (heck, maybe three) a road trip to Clemson would’ve been THE GAME. In ‘26 Miami is the new Clemson and Clemson is the old Miami. This is like the 2017 matchup reverse and the ‘Canes should beat the Tigers, even in Death Valley.
Clemson has a new starting QB in ChristopherVizzina, and a new-old OC in Chad Morris. Dabo Swinney’s progrum has lost its luster but no road trip to Howard’s Rock is without panic.
The Wrap
Miami has come full circle of the past three years and the ‘Canes are back to the cupcake ACC schedule they had in 2024. That year as a ‘half team’ program, Miami finished the regular season 10-2 with losses to unranked teams in GT and ‘Cuse.
After surviving the super tough 2025 schedule, especially that playoff run, no one should doubt whether or not Mario Cristobal has built a ‘playoff’ roster. Playoffs are when you bring the lumber and Cristobal has built a program around defense and typically smart QB play (minus a few snafus from Carson Beck and Cam Ward).
With four cupcakes to start the season and let the roster gel, and only one ranked opponent per preseason metrics, Miami HAS TO finish this season 11-1 or 12-0. Miami HAS TO get to the ACC Championship Game, and honestly- the ‘Canes need to FINALLY win the damn thing!
Season prediction: 11-1, ACC Champions, Final Four of the CFB Playoff.
