Sooners Announce Fan Experience Enhancements Ahead of Home Opener

Oklahoma is making a real push to improve the game day experience at Gaylord Family – Oklahoma Memorial Stadium this season.

Ahead of the Sept. 4 home opener against UTEP, the athletics department announced a long list of upgrades that came directly from fan surveys about atmosphere, concessions, traffic, and overall game day flow.

One of the bigger questions since Oklahoma joined the SEC was whether the environment would start to feel more like a true SEC home venue. The school has clearly invested in that side of things. SEC Nation, the SEC Network's weekly pregame show, was in Norman three times last year, and the department is still trying to tighten up everything from the moment fans leave the house to the time they leave the stadium.

A new online Game Day Guide is now the central spot for parking, ticketing, promotions, and basic stadium info. Alongside that, OU is rolling out “Bud,” an AI-powered digital concierge on SoonerSports.com and in the Oklahoma Sooners app. Fans can ask about tickets, parking, policies, accessibility, or lost and found, and during games they can report spills, maintenance issues, or safety concerns that get routed in real time. There is even a way to flag good service when someone does the job right.

Traffic and entry are getting attention too. New driving maps created with local police are meant to help fans avoid the usual GPS mess that sends people into closed roads. The department’s basic message is simple: plan ahead, give yourself extra time, and use the official maps. On the west side of the stadium, the security perimeter for gates 1-3 is expanding, which should open up more concourse space and add concession and merchandise spots.

Tailgating is expanding as well. The Champions Tailgate is moving to a new spot near Lindsey and Jenkins. The 1895 Trust Tailgate is new this year for higher-level Sooner Club members and will sit on the Energy Partners Training Surface. North Oval stays free and open like last year, while Boyd Lawn will now offer reserved turnkey setups for people who want the easy version without hauling everything in themselves. Party at the Palace is back with food trucks, the radio show, the Walk of Champions, and the usual pregame energy on the north side.

Inside the stadium, two new concession stands are being added and every stand is getting at least one new menu item. Canned beer will be more widely available, souvenir drafts and premixed cocktails are expanding, and the Simple Modern drinkware program is back with new designs. Merchandise access is growing too, with more Sooner Shop locations inside the stadium and the Jordan Shoe Box pop-up returning at Party at the Palace. There will even be an EA Sports College Football lounge again so fans can mess around with the new game while they shop.

There are also some of the usual extras. Limited printed programs for the four SEC home games, stadium tours, the Sooner Salute ticket donation program for military families, and upgraded premium areas in a few spots. The Sooners app is getting a cleaner design and better content layout, and local pregame and coaches shows are expanding their availability across broadcast and streaming.

Taken together, it is a pretty wide set of changes. Some of it is practical, like better traffic info and more places to buy food and gear. Some of it is about making the place feel busier and more modern on Saturdays. None of it replaces winning, but it does show the department is trying to respond to what fans have been asking for since Oklahoma moved into the SEC.

The UTEP game will be the first real test of how much of this actually improves the experience. If the flow in and out of the stadium is cleaner, the concourses are less jammed, and the extras feel useful instead of just loud, then it is a step in the right direction.

GameDay in Norman has always had its own identity. This season the school is clearly trying to sharpen it.
