Mike Norvell’s FSU salary, buyout info

What would it cost Florida State to fire head coach Mike Norvell?

A number that sits as one of the largest in college football, his buyout if fired is 85% of whatever compensation is remaining on his contract. If fired at the end of the season, he would be owed $58,667,708 — as of November 22, that number is approximately $58.7 million.

Florida State would be required to pay the buyout in equal monthly installments throughout the remainder of the deal or in one lump sum.

Norvell signed a major extension following Florida State’s 13-0 regular season, ACC Championship and reported pursuit from Alabama, tacking on an additional two years to his current contract with a significant raise ($84.2 million total salary). His 2026 salary of $10.3 million would make him the seventh-highest-paid coach in college football.

Originally intended to be paid $9,935,000 in 2025, Norvell signed an updated contract last December, donating $4.5 million of his salary towards a new Florida State fundraising initiative, though the adjustment included language guaranteeing 85% of a pro-rated sum to offset the difference in salary. In 2025, that number is $4.5 million, earning him $3,825,000.

Norvell, initially hired through 2025 at $26.5 million per year, received a one-year contract extension in 2021, one that lasted through 2026. Then in February 2023, following FSU’s 10-3 season, he was extended through 2029 with an average salary of $8.5 million per year ($54.8 million in total), which was eventually followed by his updated contract later that year.

In his sixth season with Florida State, Norvell currently sits at 36-31 overall, with a 20-24 record in ACC play.
